I like this! I'm picturing the narration as being very Sam Spade in style.

Yaz lands in Los Angeles, 1936, but the brusque travel leaves her dazed for a few minutes: when she recovers, she finds out that someone has stolen the sonic - and now she'll have to show some serious detective skills if she wants to recover it.Ī few notes: aside from the screwdriver (which no one knows how to use anyway), this episode would have no sci-fi elements Yasmin would narrate most of it with voice-overs to allow the other members of the main cast to appear in something other than the first and final scenes, there would be a couple of scenes where Yaz imagines how certain events would go if the others were with her. The TARDIS is hit by a chronal storm, and her defenses aren't completely up to the test: some chronal waves hit Yasmin and she gets transported to another place and another time before she's completely disappeared, the Doctor manages to throw her the sonic screwdriver - Yaz can use it to send a signal to the TARDIS, and the Doctor will then be able to recover her. Would you like Yaz to actually use her police officer skills? Do you hope that one day Doctor Who will do a new pure historical episode? Do you enjoy Doctor-lite episodes? Boy, do I have a story for you!

THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE SONIC SCREWDRIVER

Find an old companion or find a brand new situation, with only a glancing appearance of the Doctor. That's my Doctor-Lite episode, and yes it's slightly fan-wank as it only appeals to fans of the previous Nu-Who.īut what's yours? You can do anything. So because of this, they act very much like the Doctor for this episode, seeking out the best 'humans' to help, and acting very unMasterlike, but very Doctorlike, because it serves their higher purpose for when they're dumped on this planet 50 years later.īonus points, as I said, Missy has baggage, as she is dealing with Simm despite memories of their previous encounter.īonus points, the Doctor drops in somewhere in this to not be too involved, but to be there and comment on how they've handled this greater purpose, despite their motivations. And because they realise this is a planet they will in their future end up on, and be rescued from, and it's in their interests to save it. They arrive on a planet, and it's under threat.

Now, Constant Readers, it's tough to reconcile these two together again based on what we know, but here it is.Īs a multi-Master episode, Simm has no ability to retain memories of Missy, so again he meets her for the first time (and he will forget her after again), and for Missy it's close to directly after The Doctor Falls. The episode can start and finish with the Doctor in a vignette, but the camera quickly pans to Two Masters: John Simm and Missy.
